For years the population has questioned whether the legal rights have a appropriate age limit, driving at 16 voting and joining the military at 18 and lastly drinking and smoking at 21. Many people are quite controversial on the topic of teen drivers, personally, I agree with the driving age because at 16 a person already has the capability to determine right from wrong. I strongly believe that before granting a teen the permission to drive a vehicle, they should receive a course to ensure teens understand the rules of being behind the wheel. The problem is that adults are using this right to accuse teen drivers of many of the roadway accidents, recent studies haven proven that the change in "tougher licensing laws have led to 1,348 fewer fatal car crashes involving 16-year-old drivers. But during the same period, fatal crashes involving 18-year-old drivers increased." (Aubrey, 256) At the same time people can choose the leader of their country and go to war and risk their lives before they can drink a beer at a game. It has been proven that "alcohol consumption can interfere with development of the young adult brain's frontal lobes, essential for functions such as emotional regulation, planning and organizing." If "adults" at 18 have the mental capacity to be legally independent than they should be able to make their own decisions on whether they want to drink or smoke. I think legally children become adults at 18 when they legally can be independent from their legal guardians and have the capability to sustain their own needs because if they can handle the rights they obtain at 18, when the supposedly become adults, than they should be given all the rights of an adult.
